Libraries Leading to Reading

Libraries Leading to Reading partners with adult literacy programs and literacy initiatives to match students with tutors for five to seven weeks of personalized tutoring, providing 45 minutes of daily instruction from Monday through Friday. Our program embraces the Science of Reading, integrating elements like phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension in an enjoyable and engaging manner. Through partnerships with organizations such as Reach Out and Read and Solano Reads, our mission is to enhance youth literacy skills, build confidence, empower young minds, and foster a lifelong passion for reading. Additionally, we leverage platforms like Tutor.com to support our efforts.

Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read is a pediatric literacy program that we support in collaboration with Solano County Library, small health clinics throughout the county, and larger medical groups such as NorthBay Healthcare Foundation and Kaiser Permanente. This initiative promotes literacy as a standard component of pediatric care.

Understanding that the journey of reading to children begins in infancy, pediatricians and healthcare providers integrate books and reading into well-baby checkups for children from birth to five years old. During these visits, healthcare providers share developmentally appropriate advice on reading with parents and utilize books as an assessment tool to gauge the child's development. At the conclusion of each appointment, the child receives a book.

The Reach Out and Read program model is grounded in research that establishes a strong link between the frequency of book-sharing with babies, toddlers, and young children and improved language development. Studies also indicate that preschoolers require around 1,000 hours of engagement with literacy activities to be fully prepared for kindergarten. By distributing books in local pediatric offices, Reach Out and Read effectively reaches children and their parents earlier than most other literacy initiatives, yielding remarkable results.

Solano Reads

The Solano County Library Foundation supports the implementation of Solano Reads, an engaging countywide reading program focused on enhancing adult literacy programs and promoting literacy initiatives. This program aims to inspire both children and adults to read and share the experience of a book together. It provides all schools within the cities served by the Solano County Library—Fairfield, Suisun, Rio Vista, Dixon, Vacaville, and Vallejo—along with other library patrons, the opportunity to attend events where authors speak at various libraries near the participating schools. Additionally, participants can benefit from resources like Reach Out and Read and Tutor.com, and receive free books.
